Critters are cute. Lots and lots of organizations have adopted cute critters as their symbolic mascot. In fact, most organizations “cuteify” some otherwise plain or ugly creature to turn it into a cuddly, I-want-to-hug-you mascot logo that becomes the symbol for their customers and fans. Yes, we all can come to love the Toronto Blue Jays, GEICO geckos, Anaheim Ducks and Calgary Dinos! If it flies, crawls, runs, slithers or hops, we can turn it into something that plain ol’ people can relate to. With several million species, both alive and extinct (see “Dinos”) to choose from, it’s for sure that we can come up with something that is absolutely distinctive for your organization.
Developing a mascot logo is both easy and hard. It has to convey the central purpose of your organization, as well as being memorable. The Toronto Blue Jays’ logo has an aggressive-looking face on the bird. Not uncommon for a sports team. If they wanted to really overdo it, they could have designed the bird with teeth! The easy part is coming up with the general look of the mascot logo. The hard part is getting the expression just right!
